Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test

A1C shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months.

Key benefits of A1C testing

  • Shows your long-term blood sugar, not one moment in time.
  • Screens for prediabetes, which often has no symptoms.
  • Tracks whether diet, exercise or medication is working.
  • Needs no special timing, since meals don't move it much.
  • Reads best alongside fasting glucose and fasting insulin.

What is A1C?

Sugar in your blood sticks to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells. Red cells live about three months, so the share of "sugar-coated" hemoglobin reflects your average glucose over that time.

Why A1C matters

Higher A1C means more sugar exposure for your blood vessels, nerves, kidneys and eyes. Even the prediabetes range is linked to higher heart and metabolic risk. Catching it early gives you years to turn it around.

What your A1C results mean

  • Low: uncommon. It can follow blood loss, a transfusion or conditions that shorten red cell life.
  • In range: your average blood sugar is healthy. Keep an eye on fasting insulin, which can rise first.
  • High: 5.7 to 6.4% is prediabetes and 6.5% or above suggests diabetes, once confirmed.
  • Context matters: iron deficiency, anemia, pregnancy and kidney disease can shift A1C without changing your real glucose.

Do I need an A1C test?

Tired after meals, craving sugar, or gaining weight around your middle? A family history of diabetes? A1C tells you where your blood sugar has really been, not just today.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal A1C level?
Below 5.7% is normal. 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher on two tests indicates diabetes.
Do I need to fast for an A1C test?
No. A1C isn't affected by your last meal. Insyght still asks for a fast because other markers in the panel need it.
How often should I test A1C?
Once a year if you're in range. Every three to six months if you're in the prediabetes range or making changes.
