What can affect your A1C
A1C assumes your red blood cells live about three months. Anything that changes that lifespan can move the number without changing your real blood sugar.
- Can read high: iron deficiency and low B12 or folate.
- Can read low: recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy and advanced kidney disease.
- Hemoglobin variants such as sickle cell trait can affect some lab methods.
